The Department of Public Administration operating under the guidance of Prof Dr Saima Akram Coordinator Faculty of Management & Administrative Sciences organized an Institutional visit to the Punjab Assembly and Governor House, Lahore, on 13th December 2024, as part of its efforts to align academic learning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The tour specifically focused on SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, as well as Pakistan???s Vision 2030. This initiative aimed to provide students with practical exposure to governance, legislative processes, and the historical significance of key institutions, fostering critical thinking and leadership skills essential for sustainable development. Students had the opportunity to visit key areas of the Punjab Assembly, including the assembly halls, lobbies, meeting rooms, guest lobbies, the media center, and the library. The tour was designed to familiarize students with legislative procedures and the historical significance of the assembly. Observation of Legislative Processes: Students observed assembly sessions and gained firsthand experience of how legislative discussions and decisions are made. During the visit, students interacted with assembly representatives, raising thoughtful questions about procedural matters, the challenges of legislative processes, and how laws are drafted and implemented. The representatives provided detailed answers, enriching the students' understanding of parliamentary operations. The assembly librarian delivered an engaging briefing, detailing the extensive collection of legislative books, assembly debates dating back to 1857, and resources from the Parliamentary Development Unit. Historical Significance: Students explored the old assembly building, established in 1935, and admired its charismatic colonial-era architecture and infrastructure. This visit provided valuable insights into the legislative frameworks necessary for strong governance and democratic practices, offering students an opportunity to connect academic theories with real-world governance. The students also visited the historic Governor House, Lahore, which holds immense political and cultural significance. They interacted with the Governor of Punjab, Sardar Saleem Haider, who provided valuable insights into leadership and governance. During the session, the governor discussed the importance of education and women???s empowerment as critical components of national progress. He emphasized the role of women in socio-economic development and encouraged students to actively participate in nation-building. The governor also highlighted the historical significance and architectural beauty of the Governor House, sharing its relevance as a symbol of Pakistan???s rich cultural heritage. The Head of Department, Dr. Saiqa Sadiq, and senior lecturer, Ms. Nasreen Akhtar, expressed their gratitude to the governor for taking time out of his busy schedule to interact with the students. The educational tour proved to be highly impactful, providing students with practical exposure to governance, legislative processes, and institutional history. Appreciation for the role of education (SDG 4) in shaping informed and capable leaders. Reinforced awareness of gender equality (SDG 5) as a driver for inclusive growth. Awareness of the need to preserve historical and cultural heritage (SDG 11) for future generations. Enhanced understanding of the importance of strong institutions (SDG 16) for sustainable development. By aligning the visit with Vision 2030 and multiple SDGs, this initiative demonstrated the department???s commitment to experiential learning and fostering critical thinking among students. The tour concluded successfully, inspiring students to actively contribute to Pakistan's sustainable development and governance.
