TECHNIQUES IN OLERICULTURE (19-04-2017)


Olericulture deals with the production, storage, processing and marketing of vegetables. In short it is a science of cultivation of vegetables. Department of Botany, GCWUF organized two days training workshop on techniques in Olericulture on 19-20 April 2017 in the Jinnah auditorium. Program started with recitation of Holy Quran and Naat-e-Rasool-e-Maqbool (PBUH). The welcome address was delivered by Incharge, Department of Botany, Dr. Ambreen K. Alvi, followed by address of guest of honor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Amjad Aulakh, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, UAF and Coordinator Science and Technology Professor Dr. Nighat Bhatty. Distinguished speakers including Dr. Adnan Younis (Assistant Professor, Institute of Horticultural Sciences, UAF); Dr. Sajid Aqeel Ahmad (Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, UAF); Dr. Nasir Ahmad Khan (Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, UAF); Dr. Muhammad Iqbal (Assistant Botanist, Vegetable Research Institute, Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad); Dr. Shoaib Rehman (Lecturer, Institute of Horticultural Sciences, UAF) delivered lectures on different techniques which could be used in vegetable cultivation. The topics covered included Edible Landscape in Urban Areas For Food Security, Hydroponic Vegetable Farming In Pakistan, Mushroom: As Potential Source of Proteins, Kitchen Gardening; Health Values, Tunnel Farming (Offseason Vegetable Production). At the end Incharge, Botany Department, GC Women University, Faisalabad, Dr. Ambreen K. Alvi delivered the vote of Thanks. The session was ended by the distribution of shields to the participants and organizers. During the rest half of the day, Practical Session was conducted under the supervision of Assistant Professor Mrs. Irafana Lalarukh, Department of Botany, GCWUF, who elaborated this session by demonstrating about Soil Preparation, Fertilizer Application, Seed Sowing, Organic Compost and of Assistant Professor Dr. Shameem Raja who shared her knowledge about Seedling Preparation, Transplantation, Hydroponic Set Up Establishment.. More than 300 participants attended the event enthusiastically. Prof Dr M. Amjad Aulakh appreciated the efforts of the organizing team. He also admired the discipline and devotion of female students. Overall event was successful.
