Molecular Biology Group

Plant molecular biology is the study of the molecular basis of plant life. It is particularly concerned with the processes by which the information encoded in the genome is manifested as structures, processes and behaviours. The Molecular Biology research group in the department of Botany has been working on Marker Assisted Selection of genes related to stress tolerance, disease resistance and improvement of yield in various crops. Other linked activities include Bioinformatic studies and integrated research in Plant Biotechnology such as Aquaponic cultivation of vegetables. Research facilities for PCR and gel electrophoresis and gel documentation are available as well as autoclave and laminar air flow cabinet for experiments requiring sterilized conditions.
