Plant tissue culture is the in vitro aseptic culture of cells, tissues, organs, or whole plant under controlled nutritious environmental conditions. Plant tissue culture technology is being widely used for large scale plant multiplication. Apart from their use as a tool of research, plant tissue culture techniques have in recent years, become of major industrial importance in plant propagation, disease elimination, plant improvement and production of secondary metabolites. Department of Botany, GCWUF is striving for developing state of the art plant tissue culture laboratory where we can develop such plant species which are going to be endangered like Ginkgo biloba and Citrullus colocynthis. We mainly focus on assessment of stress tolerance in different plant species under artificial conditions to monitor molecular and biochemical changes in plants like Silybum marianum and Chenopodium quinoa. We interact and collaborate with other research groups within university and outside the university.
