Seminar on Ocean conservation and Sustainability Seminar on Ocean Health Conducted under SDG-14: Life Below Water Under the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 14 ??? Life Below Water ??? the Department of Zoology successfully organized an online seminar on ???Ocean Health??? on 17th June 2025, in line with the directives of the Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF). This seminar was conducted as part of the ???Young???s Initiative???, a national project spearheaded by the Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, aimed at promoting the implementation of SDGs across higher education institutions in Pakistan. Dr Safina Kousar (Focal Person young???s initiative) and Dr Tamseela Mumtaz (Incharge department of Zoology) take this initiative. The primary objective of the seminar was to raise awareness among students about the alarming degradation of the marine ecosystem, particularly due to chemical pollutants???with plastic waste being the most pervasive. These pollutants contribute significantly to habitat destruction and induce severe physiological disorders in aquatic organisms, posing a critical threat to marine biodiversity. The seminar featured a keynote lecture by Dr. Zafar Ullah Jattak, a renowned expert in Marine Sciences from Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water, and Marine Sciences (LUAWMS), Balochistan. Dr. Jattak delivered an insightful and engaging presentation, emphasizing the urgent need to curtail the influx of pollutants into aquatic environments. He highlighted the catastrophic prediction that by 2025, there could be more plastic in the oceans than fish, urging collective action to safeguard marine ecosystems for future generations. The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, fostering meaningful dialogue among students and faculty on sustainable practices and marine conservation strategies. This initiative reflects the university???s commitment to environmental education and the global pursuit of the United Nations??? Sustainable Development Goals.
