A policy dialogue and round table discussion on the Legislative Ban of Partially Hydrogenated Oils (PHOs) was organized at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) with the objective of addressing public health concerns related to industrial trans fatty acids (iTFAs) and strengthening evidence-based food policy in Pakistan. The event was attended by key stakeholders from academia, regulatory authorities, civil society, parliamentarians, public health experts, and youth representatives. The session began with opening remarks by the Vice Chancellor, UAF, Dean Faculty of Food, Nutrition and Home Sciences, and representatives of Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA). Dr. Madiha Ilyas, Head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences, participated in the policy dialogue as a panelist during the open plenary discussion. She shared expert academic insights on the adverse health impacts of PHOs, the nutritional implications of trans fats, and emphasized the need for strong legislative measures, effective enforcement, and multisectoral collaboration to eliminate PHOs from the food supply. The keynote address on public health risks associated with iTFAs was delivered by Mr. Munawar Hussain, Senior Health and Nutrition Expert, followed by updates from the Punjab Food Authority. The plenary discussion was moderated by Dr. Allah Rakha, allowing diverse perspectives from academia, civil society, youth, PCSIR/PSQCA, and policymakers. The dialogue concluded with a Q&A session, identification of future action points, pledge signing, and closing remarks, reinforcing collective commitment towards promoting healthier food systems and protecting public health in Pakistan.
