The Department of Botany, GCWUF, in collaboration with the Environmental Club and Quality Enhancement Cell, GCWUF, organized a thought-provoking seminar titled '||chr(39)||'Effective Waste Management for Biodiversity Conservation'||chr(39)||' as part of an initiative aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Life on Land) on May 21, 2025. Dr. Abida Kausar, Chief Organizer, Incharge of the Environmental Club, and Acting Chairperson of the Department of Botany, welcomed the guest speaker and provided an overview of the seminar.ÚThe guest speaker, Ms. Hina Saleem, Deputy Director of WASA, Faisalabad, delivered a thoughtful lecture on waste management techniques. She emphasized that effective waste management is crucial for maintaining environmental sustainability, public health, and economic efficiency. One of the most effective techniques is the waste hierarchy, which prioritizes waste handling methods in the following order: prevention, minimization, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and disposal. She further added that by focusing on reducing waste generation at the source and promoting the reuse of materials, this approach significantly reduces the volume of waste that ends up in landfills. Recycling transforms waste into new products, conserving raw materials and energy, while energy recovery from non-recyclable waste provides a secondary benefit by generating electricity or heat. She emphasized that implementing these methods requires supportive policies, public awareness, and infrastructure, such as recycling facilities and composting units, to achieve the desired results.ÚÚThe event concluded with the presentation of a souvenir to the distinguished speaker.
