Outdoor, hands-on and experiential learning, as opposed to instruction-based learning in classroom, increases student satisfaction and motivation leading to a deeper understanding of the subject. In accordance to outdoor learning, a tour was planned to Soon Valley for the students of Botany(GCWUF), engaged in studying Plant Ecology and Phytogeography on 13th November, 2021 (Saturday). The specific objectives of the study tour were: (a) to provide students with a hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how the local botanicals of Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms contribute to the existence of other life forms in their surroundings in an outdoor setting and (b) to evaluate student-perceived and actual knowledge gained from the exercise by summative assessments. The Tour was organized by the respected Dr. Abida Kausar (Incharge), Dr. Fozia Farhat (Assistant Professor) and Ms. Arneeb Tariq (Lecturer), Department of Botany, GCWUF. The Journey was set to its first destination i.e Kanhati Garden from Faisalabad at 6:00am. Approximately 170 students from the department of Botany has joined the tour. Kanhati Garden is famous for its delicious sweet juicy late Valentia citrus variety (brought from Florida, the US in 1932) and also known for its indigenous flora and fauna, which found no other place in Punjab share this uniqueness. Then students visited Khabiki Lake, which is a salt water lake, they also enjoyed boating there and amazed by the beautiful sceneries of this region. Students learnt about the indigenous flora of Soon valley. We definitely recall those existing and thrilling roads, the mountains, lacks and sun set view at Khabiki lake. The department of botany is extremely thankful to Dr. Robina Farooq, worthy Vice Chancellor, GCWUF for providing kind approval and support. Moreover, the tour was not possible without expert driving skills of our drivers and security staff.
